In my view, a fairy tale wedding deserves a story book invitation. </span><a href="http://leaantoniodesignla.squarespace.com/imported-20120417061322/2012/4/19/story-book-invitation.html" style="background-color: #fafafa; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px;">(More)</a><br />

Here are a few takes on the silhouette using a patterned background and a black matte.<br />

It was a warm day in LA. Traffic was light for a Sunday afternoon in K-Town. We had sushi at an unmemorable place down the street. He was wearing a sweater, I was wearing black stiletto boots and a dress that would would qualify today as a shirt. We were in line to see The Killers... remember them? My five-year-old used to sing Mr. Brightside in her car seat.<br />
<br />
To kill time while waiting in line, I snapped a number of pictures of the distinctive architecture of the Wiltern Theatre, the people streaming out of the Metro stop across the street, and the "eccentric" homeless man taking a nap at the bus stop. One of those photos became the basis of this painting, "Wilshire Reflection."<br />
<br />
Some people think it's a photo. Technically it is, I guess, a photo of a painting. <br />
<br />
The painting hung in a local exhibition in South Pasadena. One day, an art director for the Metro offered to buy it. For his wife, as a birthday present. He liked the Metro blade reflected in the glass. I think he rode a bicycle.<br />
<br />
I miss that painting.Lea Antoniohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01490081995696064045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661546815279196855.post-69670675607398253652012-04-03T16:19:00.002-07:002012-04-03T16:23:33.568-07:00Steampunks: The WeddingI was so honored to have been chosen to create decorative elements for a steampunk wedding and this weekend, the wedding day finally arrived! The event took place at the fabulous Marvimon House in Los Angeles, a gorgeous mix of raw brick, velvet drapes, succulent living walls, vintage lighting, and a gorgeous sunny courtyard.<br />
<br />
We had all manner of inventive gadgetry and mechanical mayhem, starting with blueprint wedding programs, all rolled and presented in a pile of vintage suitcases.<br />
<br />

Long dark wood trestle tables were set with simple china and linens, and each place setting featured vintage library cards embellished with brass or copper gears and a be-ribboned brass key.<br />

Sometimes I need a kickstart to my creativity...<br />
<br />
My daily dose of inspiration often comes via <a href="http://www.brainpickings.org/">Brain Pickings</a>, a beautifully curated newsletter highlighting a treasure trove of culture, art, literature, you name it. <br />
<br />
I just ordered Austin Kleon's <a href="http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/03/08/steal-like-an-artist-austin-kleon-book/">"Steal Like an Artist"</a> --- I suspect it's just what I need for that little extra bit of motivation. </div>Lea Antoniohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01490081995696064045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661546815279196855.post-77659978093776107372012-03-21T21:52:00.000-07:002012-03-21T21:52:47.200-07:00Easter Egg Banner<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kzygzo7PSDg/T2qtxUBGQ5I/AAAAAAAAG6M/Ci3YNsENe2E/s1600/sprint-easter-banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kzygzo7PSDg/T2qtxUBGQ5I/AAAAAAAAG6M/Ci3YNsENe2E/s400/sprint-easter-banner.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Here's my take on a festive banner --- with decorative easter eggs instead of pennants. In keeping with the large event space, each egg needed to be fairly large --- in this case over 24" tall.<br />
<br />
Using a combination of spray paint and acrylics, I painted the base colors for maximum impact and visibility. I chose vibrant shades of pink, teal, aqua, violet, chartreuse and turquoise and embellished with intricate decorative motifs based on vintage fabric, wallpaper designs, and pottery decorations. Last, I used puffy paint ---- yes, the ones that come in squeeze tubes --- and applied Faberge-style filigrees and other embellishments for added dimension and interest.<br />
<br />
Here's a photo of an egg in progress....<br />

For this fabulous Egg Hunt, I decided to go witty and whimsical, with a touch of the graciousness of "Downton Abbey," with a topiary bunny wearing a velvet waistcoat atop a granite pedestal.<br /><br />Using acrylic paint on foamboard, I was able to create a dimensional, yet light-weight and portable, decorative element which can be stored and re-used year after year. Faux painting techniques --- the stone texture with the grisaille work, boxwood texture of the topiary --- create the the highlights and shadows that give the piece dimensionality. As an added bonus, various tactile items --- real buttons on the cuffs, a silk daisy on the lapel, and puffy paint for the stitching and piping --- were added to the flat painting. The silk flag on a long pole gives the piece a bit of movement and fun.<div><br /></div><div>More Easter projects to come!</div>Lea Antoniohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01490081995696064045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661546815279196855.post-26843730185453900042012-03-12T14:32:00.001-07:002012-03-13T12:56:02.168-07:00Treasure Hunt: Ode to Edgar Allan Poe<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
I love old books --- the older, more dog-eared, and tattered, the better. While this preference for the worn and battered probably won't increase the value of my collection, it almost guarantees that the books that find their way onto my shelves were well-read and well-loved.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This weekend, my husband and I came across this lovely volume of poems by Edgar Allan Poe at <a href="http://www.thecurioemporium.com/">The Curio Emporium</a> in South Pasadena. Published in 1891, this edition includes "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "To Helen." The beautiful embossed leather cover was tattered along the spine, and each page was edged with the nicotine-colored patina of old paper. The leather had so worn away on the spine that the stitching which binds the pages together was visible, stained and brittle with age.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Published by T.Y. Crowell & Co., 1891</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Despite the signs of wear, there is no denying the beauty of the actual book.... the name Edgar Allan Poe emblazoned in gold leaf across the front in gorgeous antique lettering; the embossed acanthus leaf design on the leather, gold leaf edges and wax paper liners on the engraved illustration.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> Newspaper clippings tucked into the pages.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
As an added attraction, a previous owner had snipped newspaper articles about Poe's romance with a certain Mrs. Whitman from a Boston newspaper in 1916. These various clippings were all carefully tucked within the pages of the book and are as delicate and ephemeral as butterfly wings after almost a century. Various Inscriptions and book plates detail a history of a treasured book being passed from one book lover to the next, and I'm so proud to be a stop along the way on its journey.<br />

Sad day. The Rialto Theatre's sign --- crumbling, peeling, rusting and glorious --- is coming down for safety reasons. I for one have always considered the Rialto Theatre, in its Spanish Baroque splendor, the centerpiece of our small town, and am so sad that the building will lose its crown.<br />
<br />
As recently as a few years ago, you could still see lines forming on Fair Oaks Blvd. at midnight for screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Shining, and Halloween, which was filmed right here in South Pasadena. We sat on the uncomfortable seats, with the springs poking painfully into our bottoms, hoping that the armrest wouldn't fall off in the middle of the movie. But that was all part of the "experience" --- a little throwback to a simpler time when widescreen televisions and 5.1 sound were unknown.<br />
<br />
I'm glad I had the opportunity to paint the Rialto sign while it was still a thriving part of our community, and I look forward to the day when it can re-crown our small town treasure.<br />
<br />
<b>Update:</b><br />
South Pasadena Patch has posted an update, indicating that Landmark Theatres has hired a structural engineer to develop a plan which MIGHT enable the sign to remain on the building if it can be safely secured. Details can be found here:<br />

Silhouettes made from cut paper are so beautiful and delicate, but can be very time-consuming to cut by hand. I made these vintage-style silhouettes with Adobe Illustrator from photos provided by my clients. On Illustrator, I can try out different hair styles, like the Gibson Girl updo shown above, and customize clothing details. Switching out the backgrounds to test out the final look is also a cinch.<br />
<br />
The final versions of these will be printed on pages from books, vintage street maps, and tonic labels.Lea Antoniohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01490081995696064045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661546815279196855.post-48926615067109180462012-03-05T13:06:00.024-08:002012-03-06T10:19:01.462-08:00Before and After: Steampunk Ray GunLast night, while I was trawling for some recreational crochet patterns, I came across a tutorial on the Craftzine blog on transforming a plastic watergun into a <a href="http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2012/02/how-to_transform_toy_gun_in_to.html">glorious steampunk ray gun</a>. Needless to say, I had to try it out. My son has generously donated one of his Nerf shooters with the condition that he gets to keep the final steampunk creation. Done deal!<br />

I don't usually have the patience for cutting intricate designs into paper, but armed with my new knife and inspired by papercutting master Elsita, I've attempted a flying bug with decorative wings [a tester] on linen embossed cardstock to be used as a paper element in my steampunk centerpiece. Displayed on a bed of moss under a glass cloche, it awaits a few additional touches... some dried poppies, or real honeycomb, and polished stones for eyes.<br />

I felt like a kid with a new toy! After taking apart a number of old clocks, I've managed to collect a very nice variety of antique brass gears and guts. Channeling my inner Frankenstein, matching this gear with that chain, and mixing this screw with that nut, I ended up with... Lola... at least that's what I'm calling her for now.<br />
<br />
The final assembly will include a nod to her clock ancestry, lit by test tube lights on a decoupaged tray.<br />

Assembly has finally begun on the steampunk centerpieces... hoorah! This first arrangement is just dipping a toe into the whole steampunk aesthetic, in keeping with the clients' love of books, sci-fi, oddities, and gadgetry. The remaining arrangements will go deeper, I promise.<br />
<br />
A tiny carved cork pavilion atop a bed of moss and anchored by crepe myrtle branches sits esconced in its copper and rivet dome. Tattered volumes sit on a tray made from the back panel of a London County Council clock, embellished with some gears and trimmed with the clock's chain. <br />
<br />
An alligator claw atop a copper plumbing fixture adds a touch of the unexpected. For height, pthalo blue-painted pear branches adorned with paper leaves (cut from pages of the Disraeli biography) is anchored to the tray with copper pipe fittings.<br />

They are pretty easy to find at thrift stores and, if worse comes to worse, you can always turn a glass bowl upside-down. Here are a few of the glass objects I scored for a few dollars at St. Vincent de Paul in downtown LA.<br />
<div><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A wooden cheese plate with glass cover, upturned bowl of floor-standing candle holder, and an old liqueur bottle (there was even a little bit of liqueur left in the bottle!).</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div>After applying some weld lines and rivets to the wooden cheese plate, I painted on some iron paint and applied a rusting solution. While I waited for the rust to develop, I applied a copper band to the rim and the handle of the glass cover, and dripped on some patina solution. After a few hours of (very impatient) waiting time, this is what I ended up with!</div><div><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 13px;">Rust plated covered dish.</td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><div><br />
</div><div>Next up, the glass bowl which originally sat in an iron stand, now discarded. I upturned the bowl and turned it into a dome. Using puffy paint (yes, the kind that comes in squeeze bottles) I dotted the lip of the dome with large dots (faux rivets) and applied copper to the whole lip. A little patina solution and I have a display dome suitable for Capt. Nemo's parlor.</div><div><br />

But in recent months, with an important project in the works, I've immersed myself in a world filled with the perfection of gears and cogs, the smell of old books, the patina of aged copper, the buzz of Edison bulbs, and the exuberance of outlandish gadgetry.<br />
<br />
I'm lucky to have been chosen to create a series of portable art-pieces to adorn tables at an upcoming steampunky sci-fi wedding. To call them centerpieces would be inaccurate... rather they are mini homages to the happy couple's love of books, science fiction, and technology, with a Jules Verne twist.<br />
<br />
First things first, you have to collect the materials, which is no easy task when miniature copper steam engines and Victorian objet d'artes are on the list. Instead, I've collected bits and bobs, odds and ends, and as many old things that Aidan (my son) and I can take apart.<br />
<br />
Here are a few of the things I've got in my growing stash parts, ready to be altered, painted, riveted, and transformed into steampunk heaven. And, yes, those are preserved alligator claws.<br />
<br />

Warm, witty and unique is what we were going for. A can of chalkboard paint and a couple of sticks of chalk later, this is what I came up with for the welcome sign to my daughter's birthday party. Fun design, fiscally sound execution, and super fast to do. Wish all my freelance projects were this easy.<br />

Coming up with designs for a teenager's party can be hit or miss, so we've decided to do erasable decorations! With a selection of large foam board panels, chalkboard spray paint, and a box of school chalk (do they still even use chalk in school?), I plan to make all kinds of decorative elements. This should work for photo ops, buffet signs, and other decorations. Hmmmm....I may even spray some black canvas for a chalkboard tablecloth.<br />
<br />
First up, an entry sign which will pretty much cover our entire front door. Best of all, it's erasable, re-usable, and budget-sound. With all the fonts available online, you can do some beautiful lettering, as long as you can trace and erase.<br />
<br />
Photos of the finished piece coming soon.Lea Antoniohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01490081995696064045noreply@blogger.com0
